HELP! 1995 GTX starter wont engage when in the water

Hi,

I am currently on vacation for a week with the ski.
Its a 1995 GTX. I just rebuilt the engine.. the engine is running amazingly.

The starter button has been intermittent. I put a new switch on it, so its not the switch.

Previously it would take 3-4 presses of the starter button to get it to turn over. Otherwise it would just click once each press.

Now we have been running it, and now it takes like 20-30 presses of the starter switch, then MAYBE it will turn over... MAYBE.

We had some water in the bottom and i drained that out and let it sit, cause it had a spell when it wouldnt turn over... just click.
Drained the water out, tried again later, and 20-30 presses and it started.

HELP PLEASE!

I am not an expert, but it sounds like a starter issue... ...I had the same issue, bought a new starter off amazon.com, (cheapest I could find), now she turns over a bunch!
