1998 Sea Doo GTI..Last weekend put in the water with my son riding. Was running great, then all the sudden it died and wouldnt start back. He said it was like the lanyard was pulled, no noises or anything. Well, after taking home it would barely bump. Took plugs out, tried turning the shaft by hand; no luck. Replaced the battery with new hot battery, and replaced the solenoid. Now it will barely bump over, but only 2-3 weak attempts, then stops until it cools off or something? After reading some of the posts on here, should I remove the oil pump next to see if its seized possibly? I guess after that take the starter off? At first it wouldnt turn at all and I was figuring the motor was seized, but like I was saying earlier, it will rotate over, but really slow and only for a revolution or two. Thanks for any help...

Pull the spark plugs and try turning it over by hand, it should be pretty easy.
If it is really hard or will not turn a full revolution then pumm the jet pump and try again.
If it still will not turn a full revolution by hand with the pump out we will go from there.

yes, I had already pulled the plugs and tried turning it over, and couldnt. How would i go about pulling the jet pump? Would I disconnect the shafts? I pulled the plastic cover with the wingnuts off. I didnt want to take it apart there if possible because of the boots with the connectors on them..Also, I could understand a starter locking up and causing this condition, but I wouldnt think it wouldve happened while running, or is that possible??

Under that plastic cover, slide the stainless steel ring that looks like a top hat towards the rear of the ski, you will see a mecta "c" clip that you need to pop off the shaft then let the stainless steel hat slide forward.

Now go to the back of the ski and remove the steering cable and reverse cable from the steering nozzle and reverse bucket.

there will be 4 bolts to remove the pump cone and reverse bucket. Finally there will be 4 nuts to remove the actual pump.

Thanks so much...I know what youre talking about, I just basically did this Saturday on my old Yamaha VXR. It had a rocked sucked up in it and was locked up. Actually, this happened with my sons friend came over to help him where he had floated to the shore.. one of those weekends when you wonder is it worth it?? LOL

It's not uncommon for the jet pumps on the seadoo's to seize so we like to have you check that before you start tearing down the engine and expecting the worst.

Ok, took the jet pump off and its still seized where I cant turn it by hand. I took the top cover off the engine, was wanting to get a look at the pistons and see if I could see anything there. There is a cover over them where the spark plugs thread into which underneath the top cover. I tried to prize up on it, but was afraid I was about to break something. Any tips on getting it off? Also, where do I go next? Starter removal possibly??

There is nothing else holding the head on.

A smack with a dead blow hammer should pop it off.

Where would you guys recommend me looking next?? I took off the jet pump and the driveshaft and its still impossible to turn it over by hand.

You are going to have to pull the rotary cover and see if something fell into the rotary valve and if it looks ok then split the cases and check the crankshaft.
