Engine Head Cracked?

I have a 2010 GTI 130. Last weekend my son said it just stopped. We towed him in and looked under the seat and saw oil. Took it to dealer and he says engine has a hole in it ( Im guessing he means cracked engine head). cost to repair $3500.
My question is what could have caused this?
Any other ideas or am I just screwed?

Doubt its just a head. Sounds like something let go in the bottom end and busted a hole in the engine case.
