dying problem

Just want to say HI, newbie here, Thanks in advance for the help. My delema is my GTI frequently dies on me riding across the water. Once it dies it wont restart unless you pull and replace the lanyard. Then it beeps and restarts everytime. I may ride for an hour straight before it dies again or the next time i give it throttle it may die. It has died in both smooth and rough water when riding but restarts everytime after reseting the lanyard. I cant tell if it is a loose connection or what. Does the handle bar come apart or could it be somewhere else?

Will the engine run for a while after replacing the lanyard or will it cut out again?

What year GTI, I had the same issue with a used 2000 I just bought.. I think I have the issue fixed. It was the rear electrical box had come unsnapped and was all jacked up with watter and trash in it.
