If you have electric door locks you can easily unlock the doors with a thick wired coat hanger,

Six hours later.........

A 5 cent circlip took out both pistons and the crank.

The little plastic elbow the oil injection cable slides through lost its clip, the elbow fell out and caused the injection cable to fall out of the arm and dropped my oil flow way down. It took a while, but the motor locked up.

Lost 5 crank bearings, piston is shot, have to clean up the cylinder to see it it survived, the other cylinder was showing low so it's getting a work over as well.

In Fairbanks you can look mid June to mid August to really get out in "the heat", maybe in the 80's if we are having a heat wave.

I put my XP in the river as soon as the water can flow, mid April, but you have ice chunks floating around you and all the debris from.the seasonal melt. Air Temps are 45ish and water is right at freezing, full wet suit, boots, gloves and helmet.

I ride as late as I can. The regular season latest I have done is November 3rd. I had to stop that ride because the spray froze my throttle lever open, I had to grab the linkage on the carb to get to idle. Air temp was 18F and water was full if ice flows and frozen bank to bank two days later.

The coldest ride? Was this year, January 20th, Air Temps were +3F. I did a one day run for my Birthday, the ride lasted 15 minutes and I borrowed a dry suit to do it. We have a power plant in the middle of town that vents some warm water into the river so we have an original situation of a section of open river even in the dead of winter.

In reality the season is very short unless you are willing to get cold. HOT days are very rare. Temps in the 80's are a heat wave and only last a day or two at the longest.

Crank is 3 to 4 weeks out. Pistons are in hand, cylinders have been bored and honed to match the pistons. As soon as that crank is in I get to work. I'll have to retime the ignition since the crank is being done. I'll have it going again for plenty of ride time this summer still.

A rebuild on a 580, 657, 720 is usually a 10 hour job from loosening the first bolt to hitting the start button.

When I took the picture of the crank and piston the crank was still warm from running. I don't like wasting time when there is riding to do.
