Do the GS and GSX have the same hull?

Hello,

I have a 1997 GS that I rebuilt last winter. The ski is great, good power and I can easily double my 8 year old daughter. Now that winter is around the corner, I need some projects. Am I correct in assuming that the GS and GSX use the same type of hull? But the GSX has a 787 motor? Also what year did they add the case plug to the 787 so you can check/fill the case oil?
Thanks.

97 and up 787 had the case fill plug. I just added it to my 96. So 95-96 no plug. 97+ plug.

Can't comment on the hulls, but the 787's vs 720 and down engines have a different motor mount set-up if that's why your asking. The front mount for the 787 is offset, where I think the 720's have the motor plate mount that utilizes 4 mounting points. You'd need to graft in the front mount and probably rework the rears too, just like the guys do that put the 787's in the HX's.

Thanks for your reply. The reason I am asking is because I really like how my hull performs, but of course we all want more power. If the GSX uses the same hull as my GS, I will start looking for one and rebuild it over the winter. I realize putting a 787 into my ski is far more hassle than it is worth so I rather buy another ski with the 787.

Yeah, but I read that the 951's are not as reliable as the 787's. Rather take reliability over hp any day, plus 110 hp is plenty for me. Actually the 85 from my 720 is OK too, but the extra 25 ponies would be nice.

this was taken from this website, http://www.seadoosource.com/seadoomodelreference.html, i think they are the same, but i'm not very experienced in differentiating the hulls

This year, the GSX (dual carb 787) also gets a couple more models in that hull platform with the GS (717 single carb) and the GSI (717 single carb). The GS is the base model with pretty much no features with only a fuel gauge and no trim while the GSI and GSX have the digital infocenter and electric trim. The late production GSX Limited features the new 947 white engine with 130hp. Since this is the first time we see those, they also have quite a few bugs that get worked out in the later silver engines.

not having ridden the gs i cannot comment or compare but i''ve been on the 787 gsx, its a nice riding hull, handles very well, more nimble than I expected, great for two up riding. IMO there is a big difference than just "extra ponies" and you will really notice it in the mid range, when up on plane, not so much on the low end because I believe you'll be pushing a larger hull up out of the water.

bottom line, is a 787 gsx a good project for next years summer family ski ? absolutely yes. and stick with the 787, makes life just a little easier.

Thanks for all the info. My daughter likes to go for rides, and the GS is really good for that. Got rid of my previous ski, a SPI because it was not a two person ski.

I already started my search for my winter project. I much rather buy a junker GSX and rebuild it, at least this way I can make it reliable, and fix everything the right way. At the end I will probably spent the same as buying a used one, but mine will have a new engine rebuilt pump etc, and with everything working.

IMO the junker fix up project (assuming you like to tinker) is the way to go, it may cost the same (sometimes more) , but it will be in perfect running condition (or close to it) instead of spending the same for a runner only to have it fail shortly thereafter.

Need some excuse for garage time. I bought my GS as a junker and fixed it, put in a rebuilt SES engine and fixed many other problems. Ran flawlessly all summer. The only part I won't do is rebuild the engine, rather send that out to make sure it is done right.
