So I have a 96 xp that I believe the post or the lanyard is getting bad. So I'm going to start by buying a new used post, then the lanyard. When I do I need to get the key programmed with the machine? Old lanyard new post? Or only when I get a new lanyard? Thanks in advance

Don't waste your money on a used post if you are going to replace it.

What makes you thing it is bad? What is it doing?

The lanyard is programmed to the MPEM not the post. SO you can buy a new post and do nothing but if you buy a new lanyard you have to have it programed.

Well the lanyard seems a little loose. It also will sometimes beep twice fire right up,other times one beep and nothing no cranks. And finally sometimes no beep and just cranks no start

The two beeps means it recognizes the lanyard. One beeps means it knows you put a lanyard on but it doesn't recognize the code.

You can try cleaning the contacts on both and squeeze the lanyard cap so it contacts tighter. In my experience with failing posts it will start fine but any little bump and the engine will die then give a long beep until you purt the lanyard back on over and over.

Make sure you have a dealer close that can program it and what they charge. Some are ridiculous.

All of the DESS ones are the same. I know some dealers are stupid crazy like $150 to program it. It shouldn't take them more than 20 minutes to do it so use that towards their shop rate. Some will charge less if you buy the lanyard from them.
