While investigating a slow water leak, I discovered this missing part. Can someone tell me what its for? Could the missing one on the left be the source of a slow water leak while at rest?

Thanks! The machine is an 08 GTX 155

those are zinc anodes (i think thats what theyre called), it helps with corrosion on the ride plate its more like a steak dinner for the crap that causes your ride plate and other vulnerable parts to corrode in salt water riding.. there is only supposed to be the one on that side.. there should be another one a little further back also...

i would look more into a carbon seal for a small water leak.. empty out all water from the hull and back the ski into the water with the seat off and take a look at where the water is coming in... also note its not uncommon to have a SMALL amount water in the hull.. when you say small amount can you give an aprox amount of water?

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like there was one of these on the left, there is a threaded hole for one.

The slow leak puts a few inches in the hull after about 24 hours, that quickly drains after a few minutes of riding. However, if left for 3 or 4 days unused, it would fill about 1/4 up the battery. After riding, it's virtually dry. I can't see where its coming in, because it's so slow. I did put a lot of water in the hull, and looked for the leak, tipped the machine up, and there was a very slow drip, looked like it was coming out behind where the drive unit attaches to the hull. I changed the drain plug o rings, tightened everything I could get a wrench or socket on, but still have the leak. Any other ideas? The machine is fresh water only, I'm the original owner and look after it like it's one of my kids!

i have a threaded hole also in mine i would assume theyre for adding an anode of different material or even adding a second but as far as my knowledge theyre is not one there from the factory..

it seams like your carbon seal is due to be replaced im sure someone of more knowledge will chime in and confirm.. but if the carbon seal is taking a crap on you then i would replace it asap without storing the machine in the water.. typically when they go... they REALLY go.

try taking all the water out of the hull and putting the ski in the water and looking closely at where the water is coming in, even if it is very slow all you need is a drop or two to confirm it is the carbon seal... im just guessing here but it could also be a misaligned motor.. have you been jumping any waves rather hard?

That's normal and no it will not cause a leak. When I first saw that I posted the same picture on here a few months back. It's very misleading.

Thanks guys. I won't go looking for a part that was never there!

Mattydipps, I do jump waves lots, nothing huge, big boat wake and the like. I will need a bit of direction on the carbon seal, I'm sure if I poke around here I will find out what it is! Is that a job that I can do myself? BTW, the machine has 205 hours, and other than a wear ring, it's been problem free.

Ahh I think that all depends really on how mechanically inclined you are..

I've never done one and it sounds like a pretty big job.. I know the pump has to come out along with the drive shaft then there's a c-clip that's very hard to get to and the a few more things have to come off..

If it were me (I'm fairly handy with mechanical) I would bring it to the dealer

That's one of the few things I haven't done yet. I'm told that the first time you so it, it blows donkey nuts. Once you figure it all out, the second time around its easier. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

One way to check it is to fill your hull with water to where the seal is submerged and start the ski without a hose attached. Rev it a couple of times and see if there's any water leaking past the driveshaft. Another option, take the seat off and start it up in the water and ride without the seat. While under load check to see if water is coming into the hull past the seal.

OK, thanks. The carbon seal job would be way above my pay grade! I will check it out for leaks. I dropped into a local dealer today, and they said another place for a leak is around the sponson bolts, and I did have a couple very loose ones, but I have yet to put it back in the water, so maybe that was it. I'll know this weekend. Thanks again.

Here's an update -- I backed it in the launch and took a look and found water coming in around the seal where the reverse cable goes through the hull, with the rear end submerged it came through at a pretty good trickle. So, dried it all out and gooped all around it like crazy (all on the inside) - but to no avail. Still leaking. On the outside of the hull where the cable comes through to the back, it all looks good, the threaded piece it comes through is tight - but I'm going to goop it all up next. Grrrr. At least it drains when I drive!!

....found water coming in around the seal where the reverse cable goes through the hull...

If you are following this, I finally found the problem, but forgot to post! It was the seal where the garden hose attachment meets up inside the hull with the hose. Is it came in there, it trickled down over the reverse cable, thus my earlier thought. So, I took off the hose, cleaned and gooped the hose and connector, and it's all good. Crazy thing. Thanks for your input guys!
