Changing oil brands

Hi guys, changing the oil brand in my 96xp. I bought a gallon of brp xps e-tec oil, its red in color. Is this the proper oil for the ski? The oil that's in there now is blue, I think it was Lucas. I mixed the red with the blue in a small container to see if they gel. If they don't, I'll still empty the old oil as best I can from the tank but I won't flush the whole system. Does that sound like it would be ok?

Yes. BRP changed the packaging yet again.
Do yourself a favor and get a new oil filter while you are in there.

Don’t risk an engine on mixing oil, it’s not worth it. Drain flush change filter and refill.

Yeah, I bought that oil last week (e-tec). Used to be a yellow container (now black with yellow writing). They also brought back the original 2-stroke mineral oil. I was surprised.

E-tec oil is good for all 2-stroke sea-doos the container says. I was tempted by the mineral oil that was 20% less expensive but when I told the guy I already had synthetic oil in there, he told me I should stick with it or wait until the oil tank is "very low" and then mix. I settled for the e-tec one because waiting to almost run-out of oil didn't attract me at all...

Thanks for the replies mates. So the oils I mixed still haven't gelled and I don't think they will. I emptied the tank, drained the rest of the system and changed the filter. Refilled with the new oil, bled the oil filter line and held the pump wide open at idle to get all the old oil out of the injector lines. Took her for a test ride the get the new oil worked into every nook of the engine. Works great.

Jumping on to this thread as similar situation here. Been running BRP mineral oil since I bought my 2 GTX’s last summer as previous owners said that’s what they were running even thought the label states to use synthetic. This past weekend we did a lot of riding and was getting low on mineral oil (my bad). Rather than lose more riding time I had a bottle of BRP synthetic on hand so called nearby marina who services these and was told ok to mix since I was low in the oil tanks anyway. So I filled both machines with synthetic and the 2001 I also fueled with regular (87) octane - had been running premium exclusively until then. The 1998 only got new oil. Went out for a ride on the 2001 and within 30 seconds it was sluggish, surging and would not idle long before stalling. The 1998 however ran and runs fine.

So, foolishly I made two changes at once on the 2001 and now really not sure of the source of the problem. Is it possible that blending the oil could have such a dramatic and quick effect or is it more likely the change in octane?

Thanks!!

What are your skis?

It’s always fine to use XPS synthetic and can be mixed with XPS mineral with no issues.

The only skis that require 91 octane are the 951 DI engine.

Sorry thought I’d setup my signature.
1998 Seadoo GTX Limited
2001 Seadoo GTX.

As far as I know (newbie pwc owner here) they would be the 951 engine? So maybe it’s just the fuel? Although I didn’t notice any knock or ping ...

Both absolutely have to run API-TC full synthetic oil, you should have never been running mineral oil.

I would start but cleaning the RAVE valves at this point. The 98’ is a carbed ski and can run 87 octane. The 01’ could be carbed or injected that year, both are 951’s.
