Something is draining my battery 2001 GTX new bat installed end of last season dead this season. Installed new Interstate good for 48 hours any thoughts

Well first off you need to put a charge on your battery...because if its low/dead it doesn't help the life of the battery.

One of the things I have seen happen in the past is the battery terminals/cables having a film of corrosion on them. This will generally let the battery only charge some times or intermittently. So I would double check that the post and cables are cleaned...either with a wire brush or scrape with a razor.

Also after that if you have a meter, set it to volts and see what the battery is reading with the ski running. I believe you will want to be seeing around 14.0 volts give or take a little. If you are not seeing an increase while running you could have a bad rectifier/regulator. Could be another issue also though.

Im not sure about that model ski, but I believe there are 2 fuses right beside the mpem coming from the positive side of the battery in a red round cover, I know one of them has to do with the charging system. So you could check and see if either is blowed, mine has a spare in with the two. Hope any of this helps you.

Rectifier

How can you test the rectifier to see if its bad?
Terminals are clean battery is good fuses are good.

Hi, new to jet skiing and forum have the same problem with my 98 gtx ltd.
New battery, charged it up fully and used the ski for a day. Now when I put the lanyard on it flashes and says low 12v.
Spoke to a jetski instructor and he said maybe it could be the bilges, but not sure. Dont mean to hijack your thread, would be really interested to find a solution.

Just like the other guy said.. Use a test meter, set it to volts and see what the battery is reading with the ski running at a slight rev. I believe you will want to be seeing around 14.0 volts give or take a little. If you are not seeing an increase while running you could have a bad rectifier/regulator.

Had a nasty feeling that was going to be the case. have still to check the rectifier so fingers crossed its something else.
Thanks for the info.
If I just keep charging the battery when the ski is not in use is there any major issues?

Thanks
I'll check the rectifier tomorrow , I'm hoping its not that , when I was on the ski at the weekend it was fine it was only the day after when the ski had been sitting doing nothing that the battery seemed to be draining, but I've got a horrible feeling.
Thanks again

Rectifier

Just purchased rectifier. Will have it in a couple days will post if this solves my problem. Thanks for the help.

Replacing Stator

Put new rectifier on and still the same problem low volts. How difficult is it to change out the Stator in a 2001 GTX Millinium.

Was a nib rectifier.

alright...for what ski, and if for the one, you have listed in your avatar, do you mind share'n with us, as to where you installed it at?, and part #

;)..you got the RFI.

Check your stator wires at the ebox (yellow wires), all 3 should have same resistence, dont matter the #, then check to ground, if any, need replace, then have read, a bad stator, will then cause a new rectifier to be fried again.

I'm learning from my own problems and no one else has touched on this so I thought I'd mention it. Is your vts working correctly. Someone with more knowledge than me can help but i was told a vts can drain down a battery somehow

"12 v low"

Hello, just wanted to add, I too have a 1998 GTX Limited. I' m have the same problem as Jayele. When you first start it up it will flash 12 V LOW for 3 sec. Bought new odyssey battery still flashes. Battery test at 12.8 volts not running, then when I start it, jumps to 14.3 volts(normal). Sea Doo dealer told me the late 90's 951 engines will do that "no big deal" . I don't buy it! Because when it sits for two to three days the battery will read 12.4 volts (12.8 is full charge for my battery) 85% full. Then when I go to start it, put on the lanyard no beeps at all, But it starts right up. Then it will charge up on its own. There has to be something draining the battery. It sure seems like alot of people are having this same problem, and replacing rectifiers, batterys.., When I really think there is something else going on with these models. I have not figured it out yet, Mine does have a bad speed senser that I'm replacing it on 8/3, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with it. I'll continue to work on it and see what I find.

Same Issues

Have the same 2001 Gtx RFI and have had problems all summer with draining batteries. This weekend I tried to disconnect the positive terminal from a brand new battery everytime it wasn't in use but still ended up with the constant beeping with the maint message, and in my case it will not allow me to go over 30mph after a couple of hours on the machine. Going to try the remedies suggested but here's hoping one of you guys figures it out first!

battery

Not sure if this helps but my battery rests at 12.4 volts and when I start it up it goes to 13.1................is that enough? I know everyone is saying it should go up over 14 - so if it's not enough any ideas on what the problem is?

see mine don't drain at all when just sitting....I think mine drain after running for so long.....I took mine out for the past 3 Sundays and yesterday they both died...of course due to being older they sometimes take a bit to start......but then I'm having a whole diff issue with one of my skies..but mine can sit for 2 weeks and turn over (as long as the batteries weren't dead from riding)

I also have a 1998 GTX Limited that shows 12V low when I go to start it then it never has a problem and I ride it quite a bit, so I don't even worry about it. Mine will start after sitting for a couple of weeks also.

I had mine in the shop today they replaced the speed sensor. I talked to the mechanic about this issue again, He tested the electric system and told me there is nothing drawning power from the battery. He told me the "12 V LOW" is nothing to worry about unless it stays on. And also that the battery will vary from 12.4 to 12.8 and that is normal, as long as it goes up when running.

relieved

replaced the rectifier and all is well - went to one dealership and they qouted me $1,800.00 then thought better of it and took it to another one and they replaced the rectifier for $245...............whew it's back to driving like a dream.

Now that you have a new rectifier does the "12 V LOW" come on for a couple of sec. when you first start it? And also I seen on here someone say that the rectifier was built in to the computer is that true? Glad it didn't cost you $1800:)
