I recently purchased a 98 model with the twin 717 engines. The left engines runs like a top but the right engines will not idel and start very hard. If I keep the RPM above 1700 on the right engine it will stay running but if it falls below that it stalls and then appears to flood out.

I can putt around at 2000 rpms without any issues and at max throttle the left engine runs at 7000 rpms and the right around 6800. With the wife and I in the boat it goes about 46mph I also notice a bit more smoke out of the right engine then the left.

My question is would it be wise to swap the carburetors between engines if that is even possible to narrow down if I have carburetor issue.

Also I replaced all 4 plugs with NGK BR8ES gaped at .021 to see if that might help correct the problem which it did not.

Any thoughts on the best place to start.

Hello and welcome
If you feel comfotable in doing that can't see why not.
Are you on pre mix or still on oil injection?
If you are pre mixing it smokes a lot at idle

Thanks for you quick replay

It is still on oil injection.

Another thing I left out is after I took it out and ran it hard pulled back up to the shore and throttled back to idle and kicked it in natural. The right engine immediately died after it fell below 1700 rpms. I then tried to start it which it would not. I then pulled the plugs and they looked awful wet. Put the original plugs back in and she started up but then stalled again and would not start. This leads me to believe that it is running to rich and the carburetor needs adjusted or kited.

wouldn't hurt to go through entire fuel system to check for flow
Rebuild carb kits are ~50 bucks through sponsor above.
Needle settings for HS is O turns and LS is 1.5 to 1.25 turns out iirc. Its on the forum somewhere.
