I recently purchased a 97 seadoo XPS. It had been sitting for a year so I knew it was rough. I had to buy a new battery and plugs to get it running. Took it to the water and it ran decent, I had to hold the throttle because it would not idle. I ordered new carb kits and had a local mechanic rebuild the carburetors while I was on vacation. The mechanic started the Seadoo in the driveway to show me how good it was running. Went to the lake and it would not start. Pulled it out of the water and it fired right up. Backed it in the lake and it stalled and would not start. Not sure where to look, it was fast before rebuilding the carbs but now it wont run in the water??

Check compression first, weak compression can cause exactly what you describe, runs on the trailer fine but not in the water.

Ah the ever nagging dilemma....runs on the trailer, won't run in the water issue....

Yes, weak compression won't help with starting on the water...the resistive LOAD of the water puts a lot of stress on the engine to overcome (so good fuel delivery is required).....NO issue in air, air offers virtually no resistance so low compression could still get her started on the trailer. Might also need CARB service....DID you (mechanic) use GENUINE Mikuni carb parts/kits???? - if not.....start over.

Well, at least we know it'll start in air (on the trailer)......what is the idle speed set to on the trailer? Should be around 3000 rpm in air. You should check that and maybe even UP the idle screw to a little higher (say 3500 rpm in air)....then try starting it in the water (with ski sitting on the trailer in the water). Don't mess with the carb Low/Hi screws at this point......they should be set to factory specs anyway (assuming your mechanic knows/did all that).
