while trying to toe a tube this weekend my ski would start to pull then all at once the motor would rev up but no pull to the ski. I no they don't have transmissions but the best way to describe it would be like if the clutch was slipping under load. could this be the RAVE valves? Or is the impellars like a boats impellar and have a rubber bushing in them that might go bad?
Can anyone help?

A 97 gti with the 720 motor has no rave valves. It sounds like you may want to start by looking to see if the impeller is turning. Put it in the water and take the seat off and see if the shaft is turning. You may need to rebuild the drive shaft bearing. Does it run with out the tube?

I have a similar problem with my 97 GTI this weekend. Motor revs at high rpm and I am getting a odd noise (almost a low pitched whining noise) and I am only getting a slight movement of water through the pump (not even enough to move the ski). Let me know if you come up with what the problem is.

your right i found out today that my ski does not have rave valves. the ski runs fine when it doesn't pull anything so i would assume the shaft is turning. Will the shaft drive bearing slip? I was told it might be the wear ring on the pump or it could be a leak in the exhaust. Thanks for your input brother fireman be safe and i will check what you think it is.
