96 XP 787 Impeller Catching On Wear Ring

Hey all,

Bought a pair of 1996 XP 787s and a buddy sucked up a rock(s) first trip out and took out the wear ring and damaged the impeller. I'm new to the XP life but mechanically inclined so I ordered a new stainless impeller and wear ring from SBT, installed both, and took it to the lake. Ski had lost it's power band and now that it's the offseason I'm ripping everything apart to try and figure out what is happening. Is this a fuel issue, or is it an impeller issue?

My initial thought was to take the carbs out and inspect the internal filters because the ski would rev up fine at first but wouldn't hit the powerband and at one point backfired. Engine would rev up and go initially but got worse and worse to the point that it was really hard to start and would run with the throttle wide open but no take off or thrust so I just shut it down. Just basically putting around. The internal filters look ok, but while I have them out I'm going to rebuild the carbs with Mikuni carb kits.

Upon inspecting the impeller, I noticed that it will not freely spins and the white wear ring shows that it is touching in two spots. When I try to spin the impeller by hand it sticks and takes more for to clear the spots. So, I took the impeller back out to inspect the thrust bearing, which looks fine to the eye. when I pulled the cone off there was a black streak in the new oil as it poured out. So, I suspect bearing shavings.

Anyone out there have any inclination as to why my impeller would be catching in places, and do you think I can simply replace all the bearings and use the same housing?

The impeller shaft shows wear on it for sure which makes me think this is a bearing issue.

If I'm replacing bearings, should I do the shaft also, and OEM or is there a solid aftermarket solution?

I appreciate you guys for helping the new guy in any way you can. I had to do a bunch of electrical repairs and can help anyone with those types of issues to try an be a contributing member. This is the beginning of a few separate issues I have to work through on these 30-year old skis. Once I solve the impeller issue, I'll tackle the carburetor rebuild.

Thank you in advance for any/all help. I decided to start with the impeller issue and work from the back and solve issues moving from the back of the ski forward. Not sure if I should try to start with the carbs or solve my impeller issue first.
