I just recently bought this ski was supposed to just need a steering cable get there wouldn’t start after driving 4 hours what do you know swears it ran so I told him I’d give him 400$ so we agreed I took it home charged the battery I believed the MPEM was bad so I bought a used oem one of eBay for 100$ Installed it and still nothing I’m at a loss with the older skis no dess post as well has the regular push button style I’m not white what to check at this point I’d like to fix it instead of junking it I’m very mechanical inclined I’m a road mechanic so I can test anything just looking for some help

Does it turn over at all?
No does absolutely nothing you can jump the solenoid and it will spin I did this with the old Mpem just to check the compression no gauges or anything the starter solenoid has power and has power coming out of Mpem to starter solenoid but no ground going to starter solenoid relay

It doesn’t do anything when you hit the start button nothing at all no clicks nothing no gauges absolutely nothing I think them MPEM is bad

96 GTS doesn't use DESS. It's one of the few models that didn't get it in 96.

Should be able to start it by pushing the safety cutoff and the start button.

I'd check continuity of the safety cutoff button and the start/stop key. Maybe your start/stop is just bad?

All of it checked out fine that was one of the first things I checked the gauges don’t even light up no beeps or anything if I jump the solenoid will turn over but no spark and the Mpem is sending power to solenoid but no ground at the two wire plug on solenoid

FYI - The gauge (only have fuel) on my 96 GTS don't move until I plug in the lanyard *AND* hit the start button. I know you checked it, but I do you want you to know typical/expected behavior of that model.

Good luck!

Also, I've seen a bunch of posts on the forum recommending against aftermarket MPEM, even new. Pulling a known-good, old MPEM is preferable to an aftermarket.

We’ll see my vin runs as a gts but I believe someone has put gti gauges in it as it has 2 gauges as well I bout a MPEM of eBay that was used and supposed good turns out it wasent so I ordered one from jet ski plus I’ve heard good things about them I’ve searched everywhere for a known good one and can’t find

What made you think the mpem was bad? Usually a no spark is when I would even consider being a problem.

You bought a used one and it didnt work. So now you are buying another one?

Did you confirm all the fuses in grey box are good?

IF someone tries to jump start it with reversed cables can blow the fuses.

I used to have several grey boxes with complete electricals somewhere. If they are still around maybe try to help diagnose your problem.

Why I went and looked at it guy tried to jump it with a running truck as well as even when you jump the solenoid you get no spark start button doesn’t work nothing does

Don't jump against a booster or running vehicle. Use a known good 12V battery only.

I believe this is because the voltage is too high from an alternator or booster, but I'm not 100% sure.

I know not to from previous skis guy wouldn’t listen to me I figuerd he fried the MPEM when he told me so I offered him 400 for it still can’t get anything to work no solenoid click no beep no turning over unless I jump solenoid but still no spark start button is good and so is the safety button I ordered a different MPEM so we’ll see supposed to be here Saturday I wish I had a wiring diagram of which wires have power when and ground

Does that mpem have a provision for any fuses? Did you confirm they are not blown? IIRC there is a 15 amp fuse on module that goes directly to the solenoid.

Yes it is the little two wire connector on the solenoid as well one wire has constant power and the other I suppose is supposed to be a ground but there’s no ground if you check
