Hi Everyone,

new to the whole jet ski thing really, but learning fast!

Im also over the pond in the UK, so lots of sea use.

Ive bought the above ski, and it started to bog down a little on low revs. The grey fuel lines have been changed already on an engine and carb rebuild around 6 hours ago. (previous owner)

Took it out thursday and it was running fine, everyone having fun. Then it started to run rough, half power etc.
I got it to shore, lifted the seat and all looked ok, except for a 'smokey' hull.

Started it up and could see that the gasket seal between the tuned pip;e and the top exhaust was blowing the smoke.

I tightened the clamp and it ran lovely.

took it out, best it had ever ran, I was so thrilled, I was gunning it over the small waves until it spat me off on a couple!

got it started, ran ok for a minute, then back to running rough again. The seal was loose again.

It was time to come in then due to the tides, so trailered it home.

I have dismantled it and can see that the sealing ring seems to be missing.

My question is - would the blowing exhaust make it run rough? (does the fuel system use the pressure in some way?)

thanks

Wayne

Yes, the exhaust would make it run poorly. It's choking on its own exhaust. It needs fresh air to breath properly. Get a new gasket and torque it to the proper specs.

Thanks, i did read about that. thing is, it wouldnt start even with the seat off and after 10 mins of stopping. Until after I tightened the ring clamp

Download a manual and find the bolt tightening sequence for the pipe. That thing can be tricky to get sealed correctly. Seriously doubt you can just install the ring and tighten the clamp. Basically both sections have to be tightened in unison so the joint lines up correctly.

Are you talking about where the 2 pipe halves meet? There should be a copper ring in there and you use hi temp rtv to seal it up and tighten the clamp. You may want to replace the clamp as well. I would loosen the stinger bolt/bracket and/or make sure its even there and connected or in place. Sounds like its vibrating loose. Take some pics ;)

I bet the ring is in there, it's just hard to see at first. If the nut is vibrating loose, you could try double nutting it when you put it back

cheers, ill check it out again, on eof the mounting bolts was missing, so i think thats probably why its was rattling loose. Im planning to go out sunday, ill see how it goes and take some pics if i have to strip it down again.

thanks guys

The copper seal on my 95 xp looks like a big flat washer and it's recessed and hard to see. I thought mine was missing other day till I looked again.
