I purchased 95 sportster, starts fine, take it out, shut off motor, restart it, and about half throttle the engine disengages from the impleller and revs high.I tried restarting 3 times, same result. This is the second time I've had to limp back to the dock with people on board, and it's embarassing. Next time out it will start fine, run like a top, but if I put into reverse or cut engine, same problem. I've taken the accelerater up as slow as possible, but when it gets to a certian RPM, the engine disengages from the drive and I have to limp home. Very frustrating, and I'm starting to feel like a bought a lemon. What could be causing this problem?

Check your clearances between wear ring and impeller (do a search to find measurement). Look for damage to impeller and/or wear ring. Last thing is possibly a carb problem.

:agree:but the engine dont disengage from the impelor its just a straight shaft out of the engine to the impelor ,what you are experienceing is cavitation from a damaged wear ring or impelor or both .
the impelor will turn but becouse the clearance has become to great it cant achive much thrust .
this will not get any better untill you change your worn parts.
