95 GTX loud bang, dead on water

Bought a 95 GTX in '14. Ran great all that summer. The next summer (2015) I pulled it to the lake for the first time. Cranked right up, took off down the lake. Almost full speed and POP! I floated to a stop. Tried to start it up again and it would not crank. Sounds like the battery is almost dead but I had put a brand new battery in that morning. Would not turn over completely.

Now due to busy schedule I did not get around to looking at it or getting it to a shop so it sat up until now. Just for general maintaince, yesterday I replaced the spark plugs, charged the battery, checked the fuses and starting solenoid.

Has anyone experienced the loud pop that completely kills the machine? I am new to jet skis and any advice would be a great help.

Well it is trying to turn over it is just very weak. I am not getting any fire from the spark plugs. Could it be the starting coil? How would I go about testing that?

You could have lost the trigger or timing. If the timing got off that would cause a backfire. To be sure... my ski back fired while I was working on it.... rocked the neighborhood. I thought something blew up. Check your Trigger and magneto to see if they are still working (ohm meter)

So I pulled the starter and the bendix did have some extensive damage. I ordered one. I am afraid the fly wheel might be damaged pretty extensively also. I'm going to put the new starter in and go from there.

I wonder if your stater stayed engaged when you started the ski. Then when you reached top speed it couldn't take any more and let go.

Update: I have changed the starter and bought a new battery. It is now attempting to turn over but it's still very weak and will only do it maybe twice before I put the battery back on charge.
