2002 Seadoo GTI le compression issue

Hey All,

I was about to sell my 2002 GTI Le and a potential customer showed up with a compression gauge. I had no issues with this as the last time I rode it it started fine and seemed to work well. However, the compression read 110 in each cylinder. I bought this machine back in 2011 and put less then 5 hours on it but I never checked compression as it appeared and felt to work fine. Anyway, now I'm at a loss of what to do. First off though, I figured I may as well look to start rebuilding it and I was lead here with a few questions. Fist off, the internet says the cylinders should read 150psi. I can't seem to confirm this but that seems to be the general consensus. So, I will go with that. Second, the fact that both cylinders read 110psi bothers me. I can see through wear and tear the degradation but figured one would be higher than the other. Maybe thats not the case but it seems less likely that both cylinders have the exact wear and tear, although it's possible. Is this normal? Im used to seeing things like 120psi on one and 90psi in the other. It appears I have a winter project to do. But not usre where to start. I was hoping to get a top end kit from the internet. I see they are about $250 or so plus shipping. Any ideas or suggestions before I start. I don;t want to get into this and find the problem is something else.

Sounds like you need a new top end.

Is your gauge good? Might want to try a second one just to be sure.

THE ENGINE - 1) All accurate readings must be taken from a dead cold engine. A warm engine will yield slightly lower numbers. 2) The exhaust pipe and carburetor must be installed. The restrictions in the carb throat and the back pressures of the exhaust system can affect the readings. 3) Have a full charge on the battery. The speed that the engine is spun, has a significant affect on the indicated reading. 4) Leave a spark plug in the cylinder not being measured. Contrary to what you may think, the engine will turn over slightly faster with the opposing spark plug installed.
