Been trying to troubleshoot a non starting 2001 Merc 240. Have finally traced in down to the wire in pic below. Not sure what these go to but if unplug the black and yellow that goes to the 2- black and yellow the boats starts up immediately. However turning the key to the off position does not shut the boat down. Only way to shut off engine is to plug this connector back in.

I'm the least experienced person on this forum at this point, but I think you're working with the wires that go to the helm for ignition switch and kill/lanyard switch. Since the behavior is similar to pulling the lanyard out, I'd look there. My understanding is this can be easily bypassed as well, you may want to search how to do that and see if it resolves your issue. I think it's simply unplugging the harness connector but not sure.

CC is correct. Engine is shut down (coils are grounded, spark ceases) when the Black/Yellow wire is grounded. Since your engine shuts off when the Blk/Yel wire is connected... that wire is grounding somewhere. The safety lanyard grounds this wire when the lanyard is OUT. If your safety lanyard switch breaks (mine did) you can just unplug the switch and all will still work (just no safety lanyard). The ignition switch also grounds Blk/Yel in Off position.
