Took my 2001 GTI out today for the first time since I bought it. The speedometer doesn't work. What is the first place to look? Also, seemed pretty sluggish, with 2 people on board it wouldn't even go fast enough to be fun. With one person it seem to go around 35 MPH. But again, no speedo. What should the plugs be gapped at? Also, it still has the gray fuel line. What else do you think I should check on it? I haven't done anything to it but new spark plugs.

Thanks guys.

anybody? I got another question, I think I might have the gap set to far on the plugs. Do you think this would make it slow and sluggish?

Hey Jolly. For better help make a separate post for each problems that are not related.

99% of the time the speedo problems are not with the gauge but with the sensor on the back. There are some test to do with a meter but it's almost always the cause. Replace that sensor assembly and it will work.

I hope you test drove this thing before you bought it.

Plugs should be gapped (.020 - .024 in)

To start you trouble shooting remeber: High RPMs - no speed = propulsion problem. Impeller, wear ring etc..

Low RPMs (bogging) - no speed = fuel or engine problem. Low compression, dirty filters, lines, selector etc....

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't able to test drive it before I bought it but I did have it checked out at a local shop. Everything checked out good, compression was 160 and 155. Where exactly is the speed sensor? Everything seems to work alright, starts up everytime etc. But it just seems like it should go faster. I currently have the plugs gapped at .045. Got the mm and inches mixed up. Would that make a difference in speed?
