I have a year 2000 Sportster 1800 Jet Boat, with the Mercury engine, and it runs perfectly. I love the boat. A few weeks ago, the oil light came on. No big deal, I check the oil tank, and sure enough its quite low. So I put 2 gallons of the Mercury Premium Plus Oil, in there, and it seems to nearly fill up the tank completely. (that stuff is expensive! 32.95/gal)

Off I go boating tonight, and the oil light is still on! And it beeps loudly every few minutes. I have a hard time believing the sensor is faulty, since it sure was working when it first came on, since I truly was low on oil. Anyone have any ideas as to why it stays on? I used the boat for a couple of hours tonight, and it runs fine. Its just the annoying light and beeping I want to get rid of.

Both the separate oil tank, and the engine compartment oil tank have plenty of oil.

thanks!!! Mark

not sure what it is like on your sportster, but on my challenger, the sensor is really basic, just a plastic float that goes in the top of the tank... make sure the wire is still plugged into it, or maybe just pull out the sensor and see if the light goes on/off as you move the float (or check it with an ohmmeter)

Ok, do you mean the float on the "engine compartment" oil tank, as opposed to the main oil tank.

Does the following make sense?

The oil light went off, indicating that I needed to add oil to the main oil tank, and I added two gallons to the main oil tank.

But does the persistence of the oil light mean that as a result of the main oil tank being low, it reduced the level in the engine compartment oil tank, and I have to make sure that I completely top that off?

In other words, adding the oil to the main tank did not result in the engine compartment oil tank increasing its oil level. Does that make any sense?
