First of all I'm new to the forum. I've been around boats and water craft all my life but new to the pwc world. I recently purchased 2 matching 2000 seadoo gti's with the 718 motors in them. Both started and ran great when I viewed them yesterday and today they have serious issues. Basically I was took. Now onto the good stuff:

Jetski A
Went to start this morning, turns over and I'm not getting spark. I researched a little bit and found that I should check the white wire on the coil for voltage. It should read 15v+ I'm not getting any voltage. I read that the cdi box would be the culprit. So I took the cdi box from Jetski B and installed it. Same problem, no spark. I Natalie's cdi from A and put it in B and B fires up no problem. Cdi is not the issue. So I swap the cdi back to correct ski. I pulled coils and swapped. No spark. So I'm stuck on this one.

Jetski B
This one starts up without issue. Idles really nice for the 1 min I will allow out of water and shut it down. I put it in the water and go to take off. Doggy as all hell. Does about 10-15 mph. After about 20sec to a minute of 10-15mph it takes off and runs pretty good. Feels like it's loaded up so I change plugs. Put in ngk br8es from factory sticker. Samething is happening. It'll idle no problem but at wot it'll only do 10-15mph then it'll get up and go for a few minutes before dropping off. Changed cdi boxes with other ski and same issue. Jetski A has a newer Cdi box from 2007 and Jetski B has oem. What should I look for because I'm in need of direction.

Thanks to all that reply!

Check wiring plug at the front of the engine and check for corroded pin's and broken wires.
Measure resistance between the Black and the BLACK/RED wire. If you get anything but 40-76 ohms you need a stator or just the ignition side of the stator assembly.
The black wire also is the ground wire for that as well So test that as well.
If you need a stator, Lots of guys here with parts.

This is going to take a while....

First of all it run's! yay! So stop riding it now! Your likely doing damage to it and not realizing it. (ie running lean or without lubrication)

Things to do are:
  1. Compression check (with throttle wide open)
  2. does it have grey fuel lines or black fuel lines?
  3. check the fuel filter (under tub in front on right side) look for gunk and make sure the O ring at the top of the container is good and not cracked.
  4. Do you know if anything has ever been done to this machine in terms of cleaning or repair? Find out...
  5. likely have to rebuild and clean the carb PROPERLY!!! (its a picky machine and likes a good clean properly rebuild carb, Others will attest to their experiences when its not 100%) Basically rebuild it with ONLY OEM mikuni parts. DO NOT use any of the springs in the kit, Always reuse your own. Do a pop off test to make sure its right. Clean, clean clean.....
  6. Fuel selector is a common place for wear, debris, air leaks. its only 20-30$ and worth replacing to avoid headaches later...
  7. Check that the oil pump cable is still attached to the carb. ( under carb)
  8. ONLY EVER USE API-TC rated oils!!!!!!! Or destroy a motor :P (if you see anything that says TC-W3, save that for a low performance motor. It will not stand the abuse the motor puts out.) There are options for oils but BRP seadoo two stroke mineral oil will work in these (white bottle) (use the yellow synthetic stuff if you have a 787 engine but it will also work in these engines)
  9. Check accelerator pump. (with the engine off and the seat off listen carefully and press the throttle from closed to full 4-5 times and listen for a hiss each time.) No hiss = clogged up or defective pump.

That's a start, get testing and report back and we'll continue.

Also on Seadoo A do a compression check as well.

Post some pic's and video's. Every bit helps. The guys here have a keen eye for what doesn't look right.

Just to keep it less confusing. As in if each machine is going to be a long thread, Maybe create another thread for that machine.

We can work on the ignition issue here and the fuel/ running issue in another thread for example.

So I have to thank you! I found a wire to be loose in the stator plug. It now starts up and runs pretty good. Has some blue smoke in exhaust but seems to run ok. I need to water test it next. I'm going to pull Jetski B and water test Jetski A. I'll report back. Thanks!!

If it doesn't work quite right once you get all the smoke out, don't push it for the same reasons as I mentioned for the other one. Its worth looking everything over to prevent any future problems.

It cleared up but oil light came on with half a reservoir of oil. I pulled it and will be checking compression in the morning. Harbor freight is about an hour away and I want a beer after today's mess! Thanks for the help and I'll report back with compression from both machines.
