finally put new engine in my spx and stuck key in and no beep so i replaced and now only way to get beep is hold start button down a little and it beeps. got ski to start up and an hour later absolutley nothing. fiddled with rear electrical box and replaced fuse (15amp) and it started . then tried again an hour later and nothing. took out the new rectifier and put in old one and it started again. i put it in lake and tried to start it and nothing and finally without doing anything it started up and went about 50 yards and quit. i let current bring me back to shore and i poped seat off and smoke was coming from starter or wire from starter , not sure yet. i disconnected battery and left with tail between my legs. i should have never bought this ski but it was the cleanest spx i have ever seen even though it had a blown motor. any ideas out there where to start. also my vts is completely disconnected cause it dont work. i believe this ski was riden in the ocean at one time. i cant give up on it cause i got to much time and $ in it.

What did you replace?

Can you post pics of the rear ebox? If it's all crusty and rusty you can have issues. The rear ebox is where the ground comes from and they are prone to the ground pin corroding on the connector on the top of the rear ebox

It could also be your DESS post or the Key acting up. I agree with racer though I'd look for bad connections first. Sounds like that ground wire is suspect.

i replaced rectifier but the ski would not start with new one so i put old one back in. that was the only elctrical componant i tried to replace.
