1998 XP Limited Carb rebuild and fuel line replacement questions

I just purchased a 98 XP Limited with the stock grey fuel lines. It runs fine but the fuel filter is full of the gunky green/grey crap from the fuel lines. I want to replace all the fuel lines, the fuel selector, and rebuild the carbs before this season get here...so this weekend is my time to get started. I have removed the seat to get to the top of the fuel tank pickup. How much 5/16 fuel line will I need? How much 1/4 fuel line will I need?

I have my carbs off. Took me awhile to get the air box out! I already see one problem I ski was having. There are pin holes in the rubber hose from the accelerator pump to the carbs. Each time the pump was trying to deliver fuel to the carb bodies it was spraying out the pin holes in all directions into the hull so no fuel was making it to the carbs from the accelerator pump. Really glad I decided to do this now.

Don’t throw out those little hoses. The one from the bottom of the carb has a little brass restrictor jet in it that has to be reused in the new line.

I have the carbs broken down and found LOTS of dried up green crap inside. I bought the big can of Berryman Chem-Dip carb cleaner for dipping and have soaked the pump body and other separated parts (except for the plastic nipples on the fuel pump). But now I need to clean the main carb body. I am afraid to dip it and let it soak because of possible plastics in the throttle and choke mechanisms. Or, can I just put the carb bodies in the dip with these in? Should I remove them? Is there a better way to get this dried up plastered on green residue out without dipping in this cleaner?

Thanks. I read the thread again and used the qtips with carb cleaner. Worked great. I can't seem to find the accelerator pump rebuild thread. Is it part of the carb rebuild thread?

I have been lazy and haven't done it yet.

What you have done with the rebuild thread is tremendously helpful. Thanks for that!

I know the accelerator pump was working fine when I removed the carbs because there was fuel spraying in all directions from pin holes in the line when I activated the pump. Looks like the accelerator pump diaphragm isn't available anyway so I am going to just remove the 4 screws holding the pump together, clean the diaphragm, bolt it back together, and replace all the small lines. Hopefully the accelerator pump will still work and the fuel will now be pumped into the carb body instead of the engine compartment.

I will keep an eye out in case you have the time and post the accelerator pump procedure to see if there is anything else I need to do.

I wouldn't pull the accelerator pump apart as long as it is pumping. Personally I can't stand accelerator pumps on these carbs. I'm just finishing up rebuilding a set for a 947 I am restoring. The little orifice you need to find is pretty close to the accelerator pump outlet. It is really small. Don't remove it until you are ready to install it in the new line. Also don't put much air pressure to the pump nozzels in the carb bore. Be gentle with that.

Good thing is... you can delete the accelerator pump and rejet. I haven't done that yet but I'd consider it if I had issues.

This isn't how the gaskets go on the carb but it has been a while since I did the 947 Carbs. The clear gasket goes closest to the carb body then the black one. Of course if I am mistaken let me know. I have yet to assemble the carbs on the plate so still in progress.

Also regarding the Berryman's. I have two gallons in my ultrasonic cleaner that is heated. I drop the carbs in for an hour each. That thing works pretty good. I've always used Berrymans even without the ultrasonic. I've left carbs in their overnight with no issues. I didn't put the accelerator pump in the cleaner. I'm not touching that thing. LOL Good Luck !!

It’s typically just the brass outlets that plug on the accelerator pump system that spray in the carb throat.

If you replace the hoses don’t loose the small brass restrictor jet in the hose that supplies the pump.

The accelerator pump is actually a really good system when it’s working because it allows leaner low speed jetting which helps long idle, fouling plugs and loading up much better than eliminating them and richer jetting.

Where is the small brass jet located, I recently rebuilt the carbs on my 98 and replaced the lines for the accelerator pump and did not see it. What performance issues will it cause not having it in there? Do you have a pic of what it looks like?

The jet is #72 in the picture below. Most people don't know it is there when they change the hoses and just throw it away.

Without it the accelerator pump will not refill correctly once it squirts for the first time.

I definitely did not switch that over on mine. So it goes in the hose of the inlet side of the accelerator pump, correct. I am going to have to purchase one

I'll be removing and installing one (orifice) today. I'll get a measurement on the size if I can.

The hoses on mine (99 XP) were a bit crunchy so I cut them stem to stern and found no restrictor. It was all original. Do just some models have it?

Would you be so kind as to take a photo? I just removed the original hoses from my 99 XP and there wasnt one in there. The hoses were clearly original, old, nasty, crunchy, with the oetiker clamps on them.
