What purpose is the Carbon ring and can it cause cavitation? Bought a used Seadoo and have named it "Seadoo from Hell"

The carbon seal s what keeps the water out of your hull at the thru-hull for the drive shaft. If it is bad it will leak and can introduce air to the pump causing cavitation.

Mine is diffidently bad and it is cavitating! So the answer is it is leaking air to my pump causing the cavitation.
