i am looking to purchase a '96 sportster for $3000
just had top end re-built(pistons, rings, new cylinders, wrist pin bearings)
new jet pump (new wear ring, Solas impeller, pump bearings)
new oil and gas filters
new seat covers

Is this a good buy or not? I am new boat owner, and never have had a jet boat, but they look like a blast

I think its pretty good, I bought a sportster 1700 plus all the work you said +1900

So total woudl be $3600

Take into consideration WHY the top end and jet had to be rebuilt , think about it , and apply it to your decision. It sounds like a good deal to me . If you do buy it , before you take it out for the first time , make CERTAIN your carb(s) are adjusted properly so that you arent running lean , and your injection is working. From all ive read on here , running lean and out of oil will get you burnt pistons and rings like you describe what was recently repaired.....

my .02 cents.
