I have a 1996 seadoo gtx that will run great for ever until I shut it off then it will not start back up. It'll just crank and crank but won't fire up. Any ideas? Carbs, something getting hot?

I'd say carb rebuild with genuine mikuni parts and also replace the needle and seats with mikuni viton tips on the needle. Set pop off to factory specs and go ride.

Sorry I'm totally new to these things, so probably a dumb question but what do you mean by "set pop off"

Go ahead and rebuild the carb rebuild sticky in the forum, and it should explain most of what you’re looking for.

As for your startup problem, have you done a compression test on the motor? You’re looking for 150psi on both cylinders. Low compression can cause hard starts, so it’s something you want to check.

That could be a rotary valve clearance issue as well, but we won’t know anything until you do some diagnostics...

Check compression, then carb rebuild. If those carbs have never been touched or you don't know when they were last rebuilt, it's time to show them some love. You can check the pop off before the rebuild. If those needles leak any air before the rebuild you can almost guarantee they're gonna leak gas after it runs then sits a few minutes and floods the engine with gas.

Do not use the new springs in the carb kit, use the original springs in the carbs.

Buy a $5.00 spark checker from Auto Zone or other auto parts store and verify you are getting spark when it will not start. I suspect your pick up may be soiled. That pesky little "pick up" that reads the crankshaft rotation will not let the engine fire unless it can detect rotation of the crank. I had a ski that did exactly what yours is doing. Runs great when it starts. As you try and try.... all of a sudden it starts and runs great. :D Check fire. That's where I'd begin. In the picture it is the little black thingy on the right. :) If you're getting fire consistently.... you got a fuel issue. Good Luck !Seadoo stator.jpg
