Okay so I am new here and here's the story. I bought this '96 gsx from a boatyard two days ago and got it for $350 with the trailer. The guy swore that it ran but it sat over the winter, it was in the water last season.

I ran a compression test and got 150 and 155psi on the cylinders.

Now I went to start it and the thing has no spark. Using a test light I found the ignition coil has power going in when cranking but no power going out. I cleaned up the connections on it and still nothing.

The guy rigged the ignition because he didn't have a key he twisted the two wires together where the key belongs...does this take a dess key? Would this effect spark?

So far I ordered a new coil which should be here soon, any ideas on anything else I can try to get this thing running?

Thanks in advance

yeah, you'll need a post and landyard for it, unless its got a "msd" enhancer system. Pull elect box out, and take gander..

so theres no possible way to get spark without the key and post? Also can you please give me part numbers if possible. I appreciate your help a lot thanks man. I'm trying to get this ski running this weekend.

Correct...theres a "rom" chip inside the landyard, that the mpem reads, to "engage" evrything...

I guess you can jump the relay, and at same time, use 12v light test on white wire at coil, see if the tester lights up...

Okay so if I jump the relay and the white wire lights up the test light when cranking I should technically be getting spark. Otherwise I should go get the key made? Sorry I am new with jet skis. Thanks again

Honestly you will prob have to have the key made, but none the less wouldnt you want to have a key so no one can steal your ski?

Yes and no, I am on a limited budget so it would be nice to make sure the ski runs before spending $$ on a new key. I am also in a good neighborhood, I am not too worried of having it stolen. I am going to call up now to get a price on a key and what else do I need?

I was just quoted $60 for the key $95 to program and $80 for the buzzer he said thats what the key plugs into. Does this sound correct?

thats sucks...normally you by a key, they'll program it for free...and the "buzzer" is nuth'n more than a 10 buzzer at Radio Shack, that you can wire up, IF your buzzer is bad...

Yeah I though it sounded like a rip off. I think I got a good deal on the key, post and relay. I'm getting it programmed for 40 bucks and as soon as I install it I'm gonna write back here with the verdict. Thanks again

got the ski running, everyone was right I did need the dess key and needed it programed too. I have one other quick question, my ski is taking on water. In my opinion its coming in somewhere around the impeller housing. The hull is in great shape. Is there any common leaks here? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to pinpoint this leak?

Are these seals readily available or will I need the whole pump assembly? I couldnt find somewhere to buy the seals. Thanks

No they sell the shaft seal but you need to isolate the leak first. With the ski on the trailer you can fill the hull with water just enough to find where its coming out from first. The pump just bolts up to the back so you just may need to clean in between the hull and pump if thats it

okay sounds good, I will check this out today and post back up. So realistically the most I should need would be a shaft seal, otherwise leak could be between pump and hull?

jelley...make sure theres o-rings around your drain plugs, and also, inspect the "carbon" ring, under the gre shield, for cracks/chips. Most likely, these the 2-places fro leaks.
