Went to run the jetski today and about 2 minutes into running, the RPM's jumped up and lost forward motion.

The engine runs great but it seems to be it seems like there is no resistance

I pulled the ski back onto the trailer and started it. the impeller is spinning. I was not able to rev it up to see if the impeller spins faster.

What should be the first troubleshooting things to do?

I will probably just take the ski to the seadoo dealership and let them look at it, but if it is something minor, I would like to learn myself and fix it.

Any suggestions?

This forum needs a spell checker LOL PROPULSION :)

Anyway, sounds like you have a worn out WEAR RING

This is a plastic/rubber sleeve that fits around the impeller with a very close tolerance.

A jet pump does not work quite the same as a regular boat propeller - a propeller bites into the water to push the boat forward, a jet pump is designed to push water backwards and so as a propeller, an impeller is crap - it needs to be fitted into a tube with tight tolerances so that the water doesn't 'escape' around the outside.

The wear ring is what is called 'sacrificial' in that it is designed to wear out and be replaced every so often. If you insist on driving your ski onto a beach or in water less than waist deep, you will pick up sand, gravel and rocks that go through the jet pump. Instead of ruining the stainless steel impeller which is expensive it ruins a cheap plastic ring.

So you need to replace the wear ring which is about $45 and remember never to run the ski in water less than waist high and never at full throttle unless you have 8-10' of water under you.

Steve,
Yes, spelling does count. Sorry.
I don't think it is the wear ring. I am still within the .040 range
It happened all at once.
In the water, the shaft is spinning at the PTO.
On the trailer, I am able to turn the impeller without the shaft turning. This leads me to believe I stripped the spindles on the shaft and Impeller.

Does this sound right?
