i recently bought a 93 sp with a bad/locked up 587, i also bought a 657x motor and electrical box to match. I cant seem to make it run. Its as if the timing was too advanced. I can make it run with a spark box , but only idle in water. should i be using the rotary valve from the 587 since im using the carb and exhaust from that engine???

I have never done this but I think if you have switched the electrical stuff over the carbs/exhaust would not be such a big difference to use the old rotary valve - I wonder about the tuned pipe but that will come later, have you timed the RV for the donor year/model? You will find the 657x has inline carbs, slightly different cyls/pistons - but the cover and all with carbs is same so I wonder what is the spark box you talk about - how does it know when to send the spark?

A 278000423 mpem runs the 657x motor. Whats in the box ya got? Oh, and yes
you need to rejet to 657x carb specs. Bills86e

the motor didnt come with the carbs, all i have is the 587 stock carb, and exhaust. it still seems as if the timing is way out of wack. i just tried the 587 flywheel with different magnet placements and still no luck. the spark box is an old leakdown tester... its a continuious spark. up to 2inches worth.

so, i put this rusty old 587 flywheel on clean the plugs, and guessed on the rv timing(valve from 587) and she fires right up idles and revs, i guess its time for a test drive, im sure ill have to ajust the carb. All ive wanted for the last 3weeks is this dam thing to run on its own...
