I'm revisiting the problem I had with my latest (#4) XP I bought back in October 2020. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on why now this jetski will start and run great simply by connecting the tether to the switch...the starter button is for some reason, not doing what it's suppose to do. The wiring in the grey box looks relatively mint so I can't figure out why this ski is doing this ??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember that some of the earlier ones has reverse wired kill switches compared to the later ones and cause the situation you described if you use the wrong one. I don’t remember what year they switched.

Are you referring to the kill button on the handlebar or the tether...it starts and runs when I "simulate" snapping on the tether...thanks

I've got a good supply of parts (lol) so I'll just try switching some things out and see what happens ....

So, after swapping out the selenoid and the MPEM unit from one of my other
"fully functioning" '92 XPs, the ski now starts with the starter button, but with the tether not pressed. The ski will start and run great but neither the kill button on the handlebar or again, the tether will not kill the engine...the parts that I took off the ski in question, were reinstalled on the "fully functioning" ski, and was no changes. Back to normal.
Something is staying open that needs to close.
Something is closed that needs to stay open... Any help would be greatly appreciated....

I wonder if something is shorted to ground?
I would try swapping the lanyard switch then the start/stop switch but one part at a time since you have a lot of spare parts to play with.

I've already switched out both the starter button by itself, then the lanyard switch. Both took off of the good ski.. Of course, I can't give up until I figure out what the deal is... It's a tad bit dangerous to have the kids out there and have to pull the spark plugs to kill the engine lol... Seriously though, I wish I could figure this out.

***UPDATE*** Feeling pretty stupid right now but I was able to get that ski operating with the tether and the kill switch. I installed this resistor that the previous owner must of removed for some reason... It took a whole 15 minutes for my electrician friend to notice the difference between the 2 skis that the one was missing it...now for the TLC part on my 4th (and last) '92 XP....thanks
