Can i shorten a drive shaft?

I have a 95 hx. im putting the engine and jet in a glen-l squirt boat. my question is can i shorten the drive shaft from the motor to the jet shaft. i need this length to fit it in my boat. The shaft has splines on the motor end and a couple on the other. Im thinking of cutting it and pressing it back into the coupler. what problems might i run into. im new to sea doos and need help. please and thank you
the other option might be replacing the fly wheel with one from a 96. will that work?

If you are going to use the full.... 2 part driveshaft... then yes. You could shorten the engine side if you wish. BUT... I would cut it, and weld it. If you throw a shaft... it could put a hole in the boat.
