Everyone above is right.
1) The shims normally go between the mount, and cradle.
2) You can't get it straight enough, since you didn't take it apart, and even know if it was OK to begin with. Things bend, shift and wear. SO... you can't assume it was OK when it came apart.
If you manage to get it close, and it doesn't just bind... then it can still be out enough that the shaft will eat itself. (wear the splines, or just get bent)
