02 Sportster lt, port engine won't crank

Just purchased a 02 Sportster with twin 717s.
The starboard engine starts ok, the Port engine won't crank and we get 8+ beep codes. (overheated engine?) It's cold. Has not been running??
We checked the continuity from the temperature sensor and it is good. we also swapped the temperature sensors and they are both ok.
Does anyone know what the next step would be?

Overheat should be a long continuous beep. In any case the heat sensor would not stop you from starting it. I never heard of 8 plus beeps. Maybe it's a bad contact and it's doing the 4 beep warning twice. Which means it does not recognise the key. Try cleaning the contacts on the key.
