Hey guys, here is something that I am just not familiar with. I have been having some trouble with my 97GSX. It will start dry and when I put it water, it just doesn't want to run. I pulled the carbs and cleaned all the filters (2 tiny, and the larger one under the hood) then I removed the fuel selector switch, and let that soak in carb cleaner for about an hour and used some Q-tips to clean it out. Then I pulled the plugs out to have a look, and found that there was some water in there. What might be the culpret of this??? I was able to run it for about 3 minutes the last time it ran and I havent been able to run it since. Any words of wisdome will be greatly appreciated.

Will Do

Thanks for the quick reply. I will do the compression test in about an hour when my brother brings over his compression tester. I pulled one of the (I think it's a RAVE valve) to have a look at the inside of those parts. I have attached a few pics of those parts. Any feedback on what you may see would be helpful. I t looks like there is a large amount of carbon build up on the sliding valve. Any thoughts on this????

Here is a quick loot at the engine compartment where I pulled the RAVE valve from. Any ideas based on what you may see here????

Compression Test

I performed the compression test and cleaned out both Rave valves that are on the valve cover. The front cylinder had a compression of 140 and the rear had a compression of 160. Does this sound about right, or did I miss something? Any other ideas or what may be wrong with this thing. I have noticed that the last time I ran the wave runner it was pretty smokey in the hull, like there may have been an exhaust leak within the hull somewhere. Any ideas will be welcome.

Hmmm. Did you test compression on a cold (correct) or warm motor (incorrect)? Good compression should be 150psi on each cylinder (2 stroke rotax motor) with no more than 10% difference between cylinders.
Usually, when your compression is over 150, you have oil or gas that is sitting inside the motor. If this is an older crank, your oil can be coming from a leaky rotary seal. Your RAVE valves need to be cleaned every year or so due to carbon build up which is normal on a 2 stroke. Hopefully somebody else chimes in to help you as I'm out of ideas but am leaning to a leaky seal

I may agree with leaky seal

This was very wierd. I took it down to the lake to test it on the trailer. It would not start. I tried for about 10-15 min to get it to start up and nothing. I brought it home and tried to start it up and it fired right up. I put the hose on it and started it up and it cranked up and this is where it got wierd. I tried to shut off the ski but it wasn't responding to the button to kill it, then I grabbed a rag and pulled the plug wires off and it continued to run with no plug wires attached. I had to kill it wiith the choke. So, while it was running I noticed that where the exhaust pipes meet at the top of the engine, from the manifold to the curve around pipe, the screw came loose on it's own, and it started blowing water everywhere. What can cause those bolts to loosen on their own and would that assist in the problems that I may be having. I really need some professional help, I think.
