towed xp backwards

So today we were at the lake, pretty windy day. We were with my brother in law and his boat with my xp tied to the back, he started up the boat to get away from the shore and towed my xp backwards only going 2.5 mph! My jetski will not start and had a several inches of water inside the hull? Engine rebuild?? I took out the sparkplugs and there is water on the plugs...any advice?

If you get the water out... you may save the engine.

When you towed it backwards... you pushed water in the exhaust opening... and depending how far you pulled it... you could have filled the engine with water.

When towing facing forward at a low speed, you are fine. If you want to tow facing forward at high speed... then you just pitch off the water feed... and then you are fine again.

Get the spark plugs out, crack the engine to get the water out, and then get it started, and spray in fogging oil before it's too late.

crack the engine...do you mean the cover that the spark plugs go into, there are about 8 bolts? oh, and whats fogging oil? sorry I know NOTHING about this stuff. I did take the plugs out and cranked the engine and TONS of water blew out...how much am I looking at spending for a rebuild?

He meant CRANK the engine (without spark plugs) until you've got the water out.

my buddy told me that its pretty much a lost cause because water doesn't compress and since I tried cranking it at the lake, all my interal rods probably broke?? is that correct? I DONT WANT TO PAY FOR A REBUILD!!!!!:boxing_smiley:

Sorry... yes, that should have been crank, and not crack.


what's water compressing have to do with anything?

If you take the plugs out, and CRANK it... the water will spew out the holes. (and you won't be compressing it) Once the water is out, you can get it to fire, then you will purge the water. The longer you wait... the more likely you will need a rebuild.


To get it to fire... you may need to dry the plugs multiple times, and you may want to use some starting fluid.


Also... since you filled the engine via the exhaust opening... put it on the trailer, and tip the nose up. That will let the bulk of the water to flow out.

Thank you guys SO much...I cranked the engine with the plugs out, and even took our shop-vac and reversed it so it was blowing air and stuck the hose over each spark plug hole...TONS of water flew out of the exhaust, after about 2 hours of doing this I mixed gas and oil and put some in each hole with 2 new spark plugs...(oh and I drained my battery doing this for 2 hours!!) so I charged the battery and it fired right up. Hooked it up to my truck and hit the lake for 1 hour WOT to get it blown out! You are a lifesaver! thank you so much!

its still a little slow on the throttle and when it kicks in it feels like a power band, will this eventually go away as I ride it?

the fuel may have water in it. put a little marine "Stay-Bil" in the tank, and run it. (the blue stuff, not the red)
