Stuck Wear Ring Housing

I broke one of the long bolts when removing the stator and wear ring housing on my jet pump. When I tried to remove the wear ring housing I found that it was stuck to the pump housing. I made a puller from an angle iron that is part of my Craftsman table saw. Here it is:

Wear Ring Puller.jpg

There are two bolts at either end of the angle iron that go through the wear ring housing bolt holes (located at 2:00 and 8:00) attached to nuts on the other side of the housing. The bolt at 8:00 is behind my hand. The third bolt has a nut on the other side of the angle iron and the end is pushing on the impeller shaft. As I tighten the bolts, pressure is applied on the impeller shaft, pulling the wear ring away from the drive housing.

Only, I still couldn't get the wear ring to move! So, I figured that the broken bolt was keeping the wear ring attached (see other post: "Are the bolt holes in the wear ring housing threaded?"). It turns out that the holes in the wear ring are NOT threaded, but, the corrosion was so bad that it had formed "threads" in the wear ring bolt hole, keeping it from releasing.

So, I made another puller using a bolt, a nut and the bolt hole (at 4:00 -- where the broken bolt was) in the wear ring housing. First, I drilled a small dimple in the end of the stuck bolt. Then, I ground the end of a 5/16 bolt to a point and cleaned the threads with a matching nut. Then, I put the nut in the wear ring housing bolt hole, between the broken bolt and the housing. I inserted the pointed bolt into the bolt hole and nut, tightening it until the pointed end was against the broken bolt. Then, I began cranking. Here's a pic of the bolt and nut puller:

The wear ring broke loose from the broken bolt and began to pull away from the drive housing (YAYYY!!) But, the wear ring was still stuck at the top between the 10:00 and 2:00 bolt holes. So, I put the angle iron puller back on and used it in combination with the bolt puller making it possible to remove the wear ring!

I hope that this helps someone else.

i have the exact same issue with my jet.
I will be doing this exact same procedure within the next couple weeks.
Thank you for posting this. You are a clever man.

Thank you for letting me know Ed. I'm glad my post will be helpful to you, let me know how it goes.

I finally got my parts and I'm in the process of cleaning up the aluminum corrosion. I'm going to do the JB Weld repair on my wear ring, grind the stator fins smooth, repaint and then put it all back together with my new Solas impeller.

Good luck to you!

i built a very different style of puller. It worked like a charm.
Broken bolt extracted nicely.
Just waiting for new parts now.
New wear ring and impeller. My wear ring is damaged so badly, That i would prefer a new one, versus JB weld fix.

I saved over $450 buying new parts on ebay, rather than expensive canadian merc dealers.
