SPX VTS is shot - best angle to set to?

Good evening everyone. I'm new to the forum and have a question about my 96 SPX. I just picked up this ski today, knowing that the VTS was not working. I checked the motor and found that it had some moisture in it. I then checked the VTS boot and sure enough, there are some holes in it. I plan on replacing the boot tomorrow but I do not plan on immediately getting the VTS working. So my question is: how do I manually adjust the trim and what is the best angle to set it to? Thanks for the help, guys.

Thanks for the response. Do I need to pull the motor to adjust it manually? And how will I know if it is flat? Sorry about the noob questions....

Just eyeball it. As far as how to do it... you will need to get the motor out, and then adjust the rod, and then put the motor back in to hold it in place.

Sounds easy enough. Thanks a lot for the help. It is supposed to be HOT here this weekend and I really want to get this thing on the water.

You might have enough adjustment in the rod to get it set correct without pulling the vts motor or you can bend the rod in a U shape like some jack leg did on my xp before I owned it........ :banghead: No i'm not recommending that approach. :)

Strait up!

that's the most fun setting on my 02 XP.

I couldn't live with it if my trim didn't work. that's 1/2 the fun... down is wicked turns, up is jump jump!

I may try to get it working today if time is permitting. Where is a good place to buy the VTS motor? It looks a lot like the power window motor I just swapped out on my Mustang...

lol it does. I have the VTS from a 01 XP for sale... I can test the motor before shipping. It appears to be in fine condition. but I don't have time to test the control board for it, but I can run 12v to the motor to see if it in/outs.

check "brp parts" (google it, first hit) for compatibility, but I think they are all the same.

i generally set mine just a hair above flat, and I eyeball it,,,

sabr,,, i'd like to know how you test the module... w/o just having another ski to test it..(which I don't) i have two clean vts complete sets with working motors but the modules are an unknown to me. but i'd LOVE to have some form of a testing unit to keep at the shop. I just kind of set them in a crate and forgot about them, but they are worth 3X as much if the module works :)

to the OP, assuming long term plans don't include repairing/replacing the VTS, then something to consider is a manual VTS setup, all 3 of the riders in my group have a manual trim and we're very happy with it.

that way you can crank up/down a turn or two when you feel the need.

it looks like this...and they can be somewhat hard to find, but worth the small investment, and they never break !

I have a 02 XP to test against, but no interest or time. One could test against a multimeter and or 12v.... or sell it as working, then if it doesn't offer a refund... (explaining that in the listing you don't know if it works).

YEARS ago I saw a manual trim that used the left hand grip and had 3 positions, up, middle, down. which.. is really all one uses... or needs, and a grip would make it fast to change as well.

I got the new boot, which cost me a whopping $10.95 at the dealer. I took the old one off and it nearly torn in half. It doesn't look like I will have to remove the VTS motor at all as the trim is nearly flat as it is. I was going to try and get the VTS in working order but it is just too hot to mess with today. New spark plugs are in, the boot and clamps are on, and I'm ready to get wet.

LOL Yeah, I was wrenching on my Mustang in the heat yesterday. There is no way I am going to be wrenching on a perfectly sea worthy doo while the day is young and the water is calling. I like the idea of the manually adjustable trim; where might I find such a device?

honestly it took me about 2 months to find it...and another 30 days to find a 2nd one for a buddy, do me a favor and PM me your name & email, i'll spread the word with some of my local contacts and see if anybody has one around. Its literally a 10 minute install (and that assumes your workbench is a mess so you have to sift around for a socket, take a piss and make a lemonade)

The parts that are needed are from the HX platform and all can still be bought new from the dealer if you can't find used. The total cost is just under $100 but it is maintenance free unlike the VTS.

i think I paid $25 shipped for one set and $30ish for the 2nd. but I was also told the same thing, can be bought from the dealer.

Same as Nissan ZX300 passenger side window motor. Just remove the threads with a drill bit for the VTS studs to slide thru. EASY!

yeah I didn't want to be the one to say it or try it first but I heard about a Nissan Sentra window motor working. I looked it up and it was $26 new and looks like the VTS motors.

I just got back from an awesome weekend on the lake, but I feel like someone kicked my ass. I guess that is what I get for running full throttle nonstop and jumping waves and just generally terrorizing on the water. And, my VTS started working again! The only thing I did was replace the boot and spray the VTS motor down with some WD-40 to try and drive the moisture out. The gauge isn't working though; is there a way to test it?
