While riding 2 weeks ago i sucked up a rock and thoroughly trashed my wear ring. Impeller was lucky and just has a few nicks. Ordered a new Wear ring (WSM) and installed. Impeller was reluctant at first to go in as it seemed it was rubbing quite hard. After getting the impeller into the pump , the impeller would turn by hand but not free spinning. As soon as i install the cone the impeller becomes VERY difficult to turn inside the pump. If i take the cone off all seems well again. I'm stumped.. I took the impeller off again and inspected the thrust bearing and it seems fine? Ive read of people "wedging" them but mine does not look to be bent or missing any pieces. Any help appreciated.

That's a tough one and it really doesn't make any sense that it would be O.K. until you installed the cone. The cone's only function is to provide a seal to keep the oil inside the pump. Could be a couple of things, you could have a bad wear ring personally I buy OEM, could be the impeller or the drive shaft could be bent. Pictures would help.

Question, was there corrosion between the pump and the wear ring? Does the impeller rub at one spot only or all the way around?

It's an aftermarket ring... so being tight is normal. (Aftermarket rings are hit and miss)

When you tightened the impeller... did it get tighter?

In your cone... is there a pusher? (a plunger with a spring)

Is any of the parts in the cone melted?

Impeller rubs one one side more than the other. Yes once tightened down the impeller did get tighter but nothing compared to when the cone gets installed. And no the cone does not have a plunger. Its weird, if i instal the cone and leave the bolts "snug" but not actually tight tight then all seems fine, but as soon as you tighten the screws, it will turn but requires force. took the shaft out again and everything looks to be fine, without the cone it looks to be spinning freely... im stumped

make sure the thrust washer is not binding. I know the first time i tightened the prop, the washer was slightly off. This will cause it to not turn.

Yep... sounds like you have the thrust washer pinched. So... the more pressure you put on it... the tighter it get's. Also... check the radial play on the shaft. If the bearings are bad... the shaft may be going side to side, and rubbing even more.
