In the middle of riding today my 96 xp just died on me and wouldn't start again. The starter would turn but the engine wasn't firing and didn't sound like it usually would. I got home and discovered a clamp and a bolt laying in the hull. The bolt was for the exhaust mount and I couldn't figure where the clamp came from :/ the engine sounds kinda slushy I wanna say? Kinda like air going through an intake. Idk any ideas on what it could be?

With any 2-stroke... check compression, and spark.

As far as the bolt, and clamp... I can't help without pics. You will just have to stick you head in the hull, and look around.

I took the plugs out and rotated the wheel and it doesn't have a suction sound to it like normal, more like a clicking sound.... as for the plugs the threads on the one closest to the back were all covered in fuel while the one closer to the steering was not I'm trying to post pictures atm

That left plug is really really bad news. It has run super super hot and probably you have cooked the piston. it almost looks like you have little bits of aluminum on the electrode too. I would run a compression test first, but i would deffinatly pop the head off and look into the cylinder...

A good plug is like the one on the right... light tan/brown colour on the electrode...

okay i checked the compression and they both were to my surprise ok. Both were around 145 to 150psi. Also i put anti seize stuff on the threads of the plugs, more on the one on the left so that might be it on the electrode. The stuff is metallic colored.

If that is the case what would the next step be to fix it?

those compression readings shock me. Especicially for the one relating to the plug in question... For what its worth, i would pull the head off and look at that piston. Something doesnt seem right. Or pull the RAVES out and look into the cylinder and check out the side of the pistons.

Also, where is that "clicking" sound.. (top end? bottom end?) is it from the motor or the rear ebox with the solonoid?

Do you have spark?

When you turn the pto by hand wheel it makes a clicking sound instead of the normal suction sound of the pistons. How do you check spark?

Does it sound like its coming from the engine or the jet pump?

To test for spark, take the plugs out and hook them into the plug boots and rest them ontop of the cylinder head (grounding the plug to the cylinder head) put the key on and use the starter, you should see spark.

But do me a favor and remove the RAVE's and look into the cylinders for me.. i have a feeling something has already come loose, or is about to come loose on the inside of the engine. This is the easiest way to look into the engine, or you can remove the head. you may need new gaskets, but its worth it especially if you can save the engine...

The sound is coming from the engine and here's a picture of the piston with the bad plug, it has two streaks of rusty on it

The other cylinder was normal and I didn't get a good picture of it

if there is a knocking inside the engine it may be time to pull the cylinders off and inspect everything...but before you do.. try to start it back up again with NEW plugs, clipped wires and see if it still knocks. sometimes the jet pump bearing goes back and causes the engine to feel like its rattling or "knocking" Does it make the sound while running in the water? (not on the trailer)

As for the picture, yea there's scoring on the piston if those rust grooves are still there...but with 140 psi comp, id leave it.
