Replaced wear ring, now engine wont start??

I just installed a new wear ring on my '96 GTI. Everything went together smoothly. No issues at all. I get to the lake and when I went to start it, it would only turn over a 1/4 turn or so. I removed the plugs and it turns over just fine.

I read where I could have damaged the thrust bearing? I'm not sure what they mean by this. Can someone help me out on this? What do I need to look for?

thanks

That would be my guess... You pinched the thrust washer which will lock the impeller up. Which in turn locks the engine up.

You will need a new thrust washer and open it back up. In some cases, the washer does not get damaged. More often than not, you need a new one.

You changed a wear ring. Chances are you just need the prop to cut it a bit for the first time and then it will be fine. Almost have to turn it by hand the first time. When tightening the pump to the hull that will squish the housing enough to warp the wear ring just enough to stop the impeller.
Did you take the pump cone off ? If so you could have damaged the washer while installing it but that thing will not stop the engine from rotating.

Does it turn over fast with the plugs out? Or can you feel the impeller scraping the wear ring?
This could just be a battery, connection issue if it's turning freely with plugs out.

Let it spin a few times with the plugs out. I'll bet you will see some trimmed peels of wear ring out the back. Then put the plugs back in and try. I had the same issue when I replaced mine.

The prop did cut in clearance into the new wear ring when I removed the spark plugs and spun the engine over.

If your talking about the cone where the gear oil is at, Yes, I did remove it and added new gear oil.

Yes it turns over fast without the plugs. When I first removed the plugs, the engine spun over like it should. While doing this, the prop shaved some material off of the new wear ring/ After spinning the motor over a few times, enough clearance was cut into the new wear ring and no more material was being removed as I spun it over more times.

There is no reason if it turns over fine without the plugs it shouldn't turn over with the plugs... You said it has already cut a groove in the wear ring, I would bet it's either bad starter or a bad ground wire

And a new battery doesn't necessarily mean anything, load test the battery and tell us what kind of voltage your getting... I would be willing to bet the voltage falls way off when you test with the plugs in vs out

I agree. New battery does not automatically mean good battery. There has been a bad rash of bad new batteries. I just had a brand new BAD battery purchased this year for my boat. Load test the battery and check connections, both ends.

We also tried the battery out of my buddy's jet ski which worked fine in his but when swapped into my GTI, same problem occurs as when I try starting it with my battery.

Check your ground connections, also your connection to your starter.
This is a simple fix, there's not much that it can be
