Rattling noise from jet pump

I just got my 99 GSX running today (bought not running last week) and can hear and feel some pretty decent rattling noises coming from the pump. I changed the oil prior to getting it running and the old oil, while low, was clean. Dirty, nasty old gear oil but no water, metal, etc, in it. Is this normal or should I check the pump bearings?

is the rattling at idle in the water only? if so, it is normal. there is in/out play on the impeller shaft in the jet pump, which can let it tap against the thrust bearing at idle. if it is rattling out of the water it could be something else, be sure that the PTO boot has been properly greased and doesn't have any play. you could pull the spark plugs and turn it over by hand also to see if you can better hear where the noise is coming from.

I should have clarified a bit, it is only on the trailer. I know a rattle is normal when out of the water, but this one just seems excessive, like I can even feel the vibration from it come and go through the hull at idle. I'm far from an expert, and my ski experience is limited, so maybe it's normal. It just seems much worse than I recall them being. Thanks.

Im not sure if the 99 GSX has the anti rattle cone, its basically a spring loaded plunger that sits against your thrust bearing and keeps it preloaded. I didn't have this on my 96 GSX which had an terrible rattle at idle. It was not hard to install and shut it up. If you dont find any solution after following Strizzo recommendations you can try this it was relatively cheap.

Yeah, I saw that after my post. From what I found, the 99 should have it. I didn't know anything about that when I did the oil change, or I would have checked it out while it was apart.

I don't think they started putting the springs in until 2000, so you probably don't have it in yours.

Forget about the anti-rattle kit, it's pretty much useless. If the rattle is objectionable just set the idle at about 1600 rpm in the water.

if my ski doesn't rattle, then something's wrong, so for me its a gauge that the ski is idling right :)
never tried an anti rattle kit but i've been told they don't help much.

the anti-rattle cones started in all of the 140mm pumps i think in 97, my xp has one. i'm pretty sure that all of the 155mm pumps should have pushers.
