Ever have one of those projects that just seems to fight you at every bolt?
I had my dad pick up a '99 XPL for me off of CL for $600 a few months ago. I am taking a few college summer classes, so I thought this would be a good way to make a little money on the side. Thought.
My dad called me from the guys house and said overall it was in good shape, minus the seat and it came with a good trailer. The guy didn't seem to be much of a mechanic, all he knew was that it wouldn't run. Also, he had pulled the pump off to replace the wear ring. After we got it home and apart, found out the motor needed a complete rebuild. The head bolts looked untouched prior to us working on it. Had a local shop rebuild it for us and got the motor dropped back in this past weekend. After the shop took it apart, they found out that it had been rebuilt before, and even had hole in the block that had been JB Welded. The block pressure tested fine, so I told them to go ahead.
I had ordered a wear ring for the ski along with some other goodies shortly after I got it. When I went to install the ring, it was obvious that it was entirely too large for the pump, however the pump did fit the ski. After a lot of forum searching and a few phone calls, I found out that the pump I was given was for a '97 XP with the 787 in it. This was the only ski the guy had. My guess is that the shop that had done the prior motor work had made the mistake. So now I am sitting with a fresh 951 and a 787 pump. My question is, what is the harm of running this pump, other than it being for the smaller motor? Everything bolts up and fits fine, and this is how the PO had run the ski.
