I will complete the rebuild of my son's 787 engine shortly. I have followed all the steps and recommendations posted here and in the factory manual, I want to do all I can to try and prevent this from happenig again. I do however have a couple questions that keeps tugging at me and I would really appreciate your knowledgeable input.

1. I intend to follow the recommended break in procedure as outlined on thlis forum by adding additional oil to the first
tank of fuel. How is the best way to check and make sure that the engine is getting the right fuel mix so I can prevent
detonation and thereby blowing up a new engine. Do I need to read the plugs? Do I need to install some sort of guage
like a knock sensor?

2. After we get through the initial break in period how do we monitor the on going engine performance? Do we need to
read the plugs at certain intervals? If so how often?

3. I have added an in line fuel filter as recommended by Dr. Honda. Is there anything else I should add to enable
early detection of potential problems?

Thanks in advance for your input. I am to old to have to do this again.:patriot:

WELL....not to be the bearer of bad news but the rebuild will not last froever...it will need it again eventually but how soon depends on you and how you maintaain it.... as far as checking to make sure your getting oil before you put the oil pump on attach a corded drill to the shaft and spin it....check the rmp's of your drill and in your manual it will tell you how much oil it will pump depending on the rpm's you are running..... if that checks out your ok.... as far as a knock sensor...no you dont need one ....you fuel to oil ratio in the tank should be about 30:1 .....thats what i run when breaking an engine in.......as far as monatoring the engine afterwards ...just do routine maintenance and yes its good to check the plugs every so often to see if you are running lean/rich....i do a compression check once a month because im a perfectionist but its not necessary.....

brock1,

Thanks for the input. I haven't exactly figured out how to spin the oil pump with the engine still in the unit but I would really like to do that. If you have any suggestions how to accompolish that please let me know.

pull poff the carbs and then remove the rotary valve shaft cover and it will come out as one piece...if will be a tight spot to work in but its easier than removing the engine
