Plug Readings

The PTO plug looks oily. How long have those plugs been in it?

But... I would open the high screw on the MAG about an 1/8th of a turn.

open the high? on a 951?
plugs are only a few runs old.

it does look oily.. not sure why. oil pump is set correctly.

engine was running well until i flipped the ski upside down, hard to start, got it running, then the performance was off for a while, came 90% back, compression is same as it was before, put in a new PTO plug and leaned out the low speed 1/5 turn, (turned 1/5 turn clockwise) will check the plugs and performance tonight on the river.

no wonder they went to RFI, this plug reading thing is a pita.

how do they do it factory? just set it to 1.5 / 0 and just hope it works?

Yes. Is there a problem I don't know about? A little more fuel in the light plug will help keep things cool.

If you are truly going to read the plugs... you need to put in fresh plugs, and read them. If they are a few rides old... you are looking at the accumulation of everything you've done, and it's not really a valid test.

What part's a PITA?? Pull the plugs... look at them... and make an adjustment. When the guys at SeaDoo were doing the original tuning on the RFI or Di Version... they did the same thing. (but on a dyno stand, and a few more instruments)

As far as the carbs from the factory... Yes... if the engine is set to spec (compression, timing, squash band, jetting, pop-off) ... it will run at the factory needle settings.

OK... I see what you are asking. On your ski... it has big enough main jets to feed the engine. But... since that plug is a little light... opening the needle will add more fuel, and darken it up.

Realistically, that plug is OK... but on a 2-stroke (especially the 951) I like to see them a little darker.

You say it ran good until you flipped it upside down, trying turning it right side up. Sorry I'm just in a smart ass mood tonight, it's the end of the week for me.
