96 GTI 717 stopped suddenly on take off and would not start again. After trying to restart it i smelled it was flooded so I removed the plugs to test the spark. No spark on either plug so I swapped them for new ones and it fired once then no spark again. I checked the fuses and they are fine, cut the wires back 1/4 inch and still nothing.

I still get 2 beeps when i plug in the lanyard and 2 longer beeps when I 5x the starter button.
I have yet to dig into it and really inspect anything else.

Any ideas or suggestions on where to start the diagnoses ?

That model is very reliable and simple to work on. The mpem is reading the key, and no fuses are blown so that would lead me to believe your stator went out on you.

Get a multi meter and check the front clip wires going in to the stator housing cover up top. It would be the black, and black red wires. You need to crank the ski over while checking for ac voltage, you can also test ohms of that coil also using those wires.

Also make sure you have both spark plug tips touching when you check for spark.

I'm not even getting 1 volt when I test the black and black/red wire... While I'm cranking it over.

What should it be?

Well, I'm working on getting the flywheel off now. When i took the housing cover off A lot of oil came pouring out.
I might be getting into this more then I thought..

Oil came out of the front cover, never had that happen to me yet and I have at least worked on a couple hundred 717 motors. Very strange upload some pics if you can.

Well it was the oil/crank seal.
It fell out when I pulled the flywheel. Everything is covered in oil and the remnants of the old oil/crank seal.
I ordered new seals and the local marina said I might get lucky and be able to tap the new one in with a long socket and a lot of WD40 without splitting the block.

I have high hopes the stator is OK once I get the oil and old gasket parts off of everything.
Have to see how the oil/crank seal goes first.

you can definitley get it in there with the socket trick, I would think you would of had some air leak which would of ran you lean, instead you have oil very interesting for sure. Good luck with the repair

The ski did have a lean hesitation and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know....
I keep a eye on the plugs and they always looked fine.
The seal should be here by the 3rd.. I will let you know how it goes for sure!

Hopefully it will last the season and I will do a complete tear down during the winter because I'm sure the other seal looks about the same...
Gotta love ethanol !!

that crap is killing these old 2 strokes for sure, just have to be up on the maintenance and use really good oils.

Nothing but Amsoil !
We do have a place up this way that sells ethanol free gas but it's only in the winter for the snowmobiles !

Looking for stator for 1996 (787) GTX. Let me know if you have one. Please call me at (631) 698-1742,fpollina@hotmail.com.
Thank you.

Well,
After replacing the oil seal and forget I had loosed the charging coil screws when i put it back together. Needless to say they came loose and tore up my lighting coils. So I took them off a old 657x I had kicking around and finally replaced that today and she fired right up!
The lean hesitation is gone and she runs like a rocket now !!
Tomorrow is the true test.. Just fueled them up and plan a day at the lake !!

loctite is your friend !!

Loctite sure is on those motors. Glad to see I was correct

Ran great for two days!.. Thanks for the help ltdyfz99 !!
Hope this post helps some else in the future.

I just swapped the lighting and charging coil to my original armature plate and used the factory timing marks and it stayed in time.
The crank seal came out with a couple wood screws and a pair of pliers and the new one just tapped in with no problems all. It was easier then i thought.

I did notice the plastic separator on the crank bearings was in pieces and that also feel out. So the bearings are just rolling around in the race.
How long do you think this will last?.. hopefully the summer
