I just bought 2 97 GTI's with plans to learn a bit about them and resell to upgrade to a newer model 4 stroke. Now I own 2 repair plagued hassles that are wearing on the wife's nerves. The repair shop wants $300 a piece to fix the fuel issues so I am here trying to save a buck and get back to playing on the water!

First, Hi and Welcome to the forum....
Let me guess, you still have the old and crappy gray tempo fuel lines....if so, then change them ASAP to black auto lines with an in-line filter added. Clean the fuel selector valve/switch too.....AND most important clean or replace the inside carb filters....this will cost you about $50 or so each ski. Do a search for gray tempo lines and "adding an in-line" filter by dr Honda in the "how to" section on the home page.

Already working on the lines and carbs. I can't believe it still has them. Some clown just trimmed them back some in the past. carbs were nearly completely stopped up at the internal filters. I skipped the fuel switch the first time, fixed the gas gauge sender and skipped the vent line at the upper one-way. She would not idle...would fire up but had to play with the choke and throttle a bit to keep her running. Took it all back apart and found new crap in the lines so I put in the in-line filter, blew air through all the lines and pick-up tubes on the baffle and reopened the carb. I think I may need to buy the rebuild kit...gaskets and o-rings looking deformed. Took off the fuel switch and tried to clean it with carb cleaner and watched the rubber liner in it dissolve so I got one of those on order. I see a bit of gunk floating around the bottom of the tank so I am getting a siphon kit from Wally world on the way home tomorrow. I have not really started on the second one yet but it now has the same disease. It was fine til I was really tossing it about Saturday. So I think the crap in the tank is still a factor. I will tear into her tomorrow while I wait for the new valve. Should I go ahead and order new vent one-ways as well as the oil filter since I have no idea when they were last checked/replaced?

The first problem was the wear ring. It was all chewed up after a trip to the beach and on the flush run back home at the lake I discovered this after it caused the pto and drive shaft to strip out. By the way, black gear oil is bad right? How bad? I replaced it but am I looking at a future problem in the pump? Anyway, replaced wear ring, drive shaft(used) and pto(used) then this carb fun started.

So when I get the thing back together, do I need to treat the carb like a new one and reset everything? I was hoping to avoid that but I don't want to roast the motor either with bad fuel mixture from laziness so I guess I answered my own question.

Sorry about how scattered that sounds but I kept thinking of things after starting an something else...hope it makes some sense to you guys.
