found this site searching for info about 2001 rxt that only runs on one cylinder. want to take it off my neighbors hands, but i hear they are impossible to work on and that if its running on one cylinder id probably spend 3grand getting a motor put into it.

would be curious to know what people think a 2001 rxt (perfect cosmetic condition) that only runs on one cylinder is actually worth? told me to make an offer, and i'd like to hit kinda close to "fair" with some room for however much its gonna cost to fix at 30bux an hour. ugh.

all goes well, i might be out on the water soon :-)

It may depend on why it "runs on one cylinder". It could be something as simple as a bad spark plug. It could be a fuel delivery issue. It could be a blown piston. A replacement motor could run up to $1600 (I couldn't find the RXT model in 2001). Can you do you mechanical work yourself?

Try posting this question in the 2-stroke PWC area. You should get more suggestions/answers there.

To give us a better idea of what the problem is get a compression reading on both cylinders and post back. Are you sure of the model year and the model? I don't think SeaDoo made the RXT until 2004 or so and it was a 4-tek.

If it's a four stroke engine, it could run way more than the $1600 I mentioned above.

Please confirm which motor it has, and as Lou suggested, a compression check is a good starting point.

Sorry, I think it's RXDI.

Will try to get a compression reading. I can turn a wrench (worked on motorcycles, cars, tractors, and an outboard boat motor once). However, I've always been told that seadoo can't be worked on because:
1. You can't get to anything
2. You need special tools
3. You need special training and test equipment
4. Everything costs too much.

Dunno how true that is. I presume that I would start by checking spark, if it had that, I would probably swap injectors and see if it ran off the other cylinder. Could be a bad (clogged) injector.

I appreciate the responses. This looks like a nice pwc, so I'd hate to pass it up if its doable.

I've worked on 2-stroke motorcycles for years so these are not that different. Hadnt worked with rotary valves or multi cylinders. Still haven't worked on anything without carbs, so injection is out of my wheelhouse too. They are cramped, but workable. We haven't had to have that many specialty tools. The folks here are friendly and knowledgable.

It sounds like you are in the right track with the compression check, spark check and then injectors. Good luck!

I don't want to sound harsh, but if you are afraid of working on SeaDoo's the RXDI is NOT the ski for you. Try to find a carbed model, something with a 717 or 787 engine. When a DI model is running right it's a sweet ski, but when they're not it's a b**ch to fix.

You're also looking at a 951 which is not the most reliable motor that SeaDoo ever used. If you decide you want to pursue buying this ski a compression test is mandatory, on a 951 it should be around 130-135 on both cylinders.
