My son is interested in getting a 2002 Bombardier GTI from a friend. Two years ago they went out with it running fine until they sucked up the tow rope on the boat they pulled along side of to help another friend. Rope wrapped around shaft and killed Seadoo. Could not get rope loose and Seadoo would not start so they towed Seadoo back to pier. I understand now that is the wrong thing to do without blocking or disconnecting intake hose. I am new to all this so bear with me as I learn. Never had a PWC in my life. My questions are as follows:
1. Will water still enter engine even if shaft cannot turn?
2. Engine bay did fill partly with water but was drained out once PWC reached the pier. About 1 hr. later. Could any damage occur to electrical parts?
3. What steps should I take to find out just where I stand with this craft?
4. Should I just leave it alone or is it worth fixing? I can do some work myself. I'll just have to learn with help of a manual.

That's it for now. I am sure more questions will surface as I get replies to the above questions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If this occured over 2 days ago and a 2stroke motor it is pretty much ruined motor wise - a 4stroke could go a few more days but you have to get the motor running to burn out the moisture to prevent the sliding and rotating parts from turning to rust, once the rust is there it may run another week, month or hour - there is no way to know until the compression falls off quickly or growling sounds come from the lower case area - remove and charge battery, flip over and cut the rope away with a utility knife, flip back to remove spark plugs and crank the motor over to get out enough so you can put the plugs back in and try to make it start - you may need to repeat this internal drying a few times then suddenly you will hear a few burps-and some smoke comes from the exhaust - keep it running above idle to force out the moisture, get back in the water and run at least 30 minutes to dry out where the water does not belong.

Shoulda got here two years ago, dude! Is rope out? Remove drive cover and see if
engine will hand turn. Get a Shop Manual. I got this feelin yor gonna need that.

Make sure nothing is still in the intake and or pump. Charge the battery and try to start it. Thats the only way to get an idea where you stand.

Sorry to repeat the same question but, can water still get into engine even if shaft will not turn while craft is being towed? Are all Seadoo's made like this where intake hose has to be disconnected or crimped to tow?

Also to run out of the water is there a place to connect a hose for cooling?

Sorry for what may seem like stupid questions but I have never been around PWC's before only antique cars.

depends on how much the ski was tipped and for how long it was tipped in the water, by just pulling it it will not take on water unless it is submarineing(nose down in the water) behind the boat that pulled it. then yes it will take on some water. get a shop manual and it will tell you how to hook up the hose when the ski is out of the water. it will require an adaper that probably screws to the tube from the outside of the jet from in the rear.

The answer is yes, it can and will get water into the motor when being towed and it doesn't matter if the shaft is turning or not. In fact, it has nothing to do with the shaft turning and the shaft never turns while being towed. If you tow them really slowly, you won't have a problem because it won't generate enough pressure to backflow water into the motor.

Yes, all seadoos are made this way.

Get the rope out, take the plugs out and see if the motor turns over freely by hand by turning the pto flywheel(under the grey shield at the rear of the motor). If it does, crank it over and see if any rusty water comes shooting out of the plug holes.

Whether the motor is good or not will depend on if you got water in the motor.

Thanks for the replies and keep them coming. I plan to get the ski Tues. of this week and will start to see what I have. I will post findings as they come.
As I said I am new to the world of PWC so I am open to all comments and help.

Thanks again
Todd
